The Early Struggles

Faced with overwhelming hardships, the tenacious individual Pam confronted financial struggles, the profound loss of her beloved father at a tender age of 10, and the absence of formal education in their family. Left to navigate the complexities of life without any guidance, Pam finds herself thrust into a world of financial uncertainty.

With her family’s primary breadwinner gone, Pam and her mother struggled to make ends meet. They faced eviction notices, utility shut-offs, and the constant threat of survival. Despite the overwhelming burden on her young shoulders, Pam refused to succumb to despair. She took odd jobs around the neighborhood, babysitting, selling movie posters, teaching tuitions, working in retail outlets and doing whatever it takes to contribute to their meager income.

In the absence of formal education within her family, Pam became determined to carve her own path to success. She spent countless late nights poring over textbooks, devouring knowledge hungry for a chance at a better future.

As she grew older, Pam’s tenacity caught the attention of a couple of well wishers who recognized her potential. With their guidance and support, she gains access to opportunities previously beyond her reach. Pam secured bursary awards, part-time jobs, and mentors who helped her navigate the complexities of academia and career advancement.

Pam graduated from Balestier Hill Secondary School, earning acceptance into a local polytechnic.

A Vision Born of Necessity

In every challenge lies the potential for opportunity. Pam’s circumstances and the financial need compelled her to take the leap into entrepreneurship.

It all began in 2005 when Silverstar Decor (formerly known as Silverstar Production) was founded by the young couple, Pam and Prakash. Pam dedicated herself to pursuing her Diploma in Business Management at Nanyang Polytechnic, while Prakash immersed himself in his studies, working towards his Diploma in Biomedical Engineering at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

In a departure from the conventional path of courtship and dating, the young couple, Pam and Prakash, decided to channel their time and energy into building a business together. They found joy and fulfillment in collaborating on business ideas. They reveled in the excitement of building something meaningful together, pouring their hearts and souls into a shared venture.

Leveraging Pam’s expertise in business studies and her adept event planning skills, alongside Prakash’s talents as a school soccer player, they astutely recognized the potential of organizing soccer tournaments as a means of survival. They knew that such an endeavor would be no small feat. But they were undeterred by the challenge, fueled by their shared love for the sport and their belief in its power to bring people together.

Their first step was rallying support from their community. They reached out to local businesses, experienced talents and secured sponsorships. They garnered their family and best friends eager and support to help bring the couples’ vision to life.

With their combined efforts, Pam & Prakash managed to lay down the groundwork for what promised to be an unforgettable 16- teams Street Soccer Tournament in 2005.

Within the next 3 years, the couple successfully organized multiple tournaments. As word spread, teams from all corners of Singapore clamored to participate in their tournaments. From seasoned veterans to enthusiastic amateurs, players of all ages and skill levels signed up, eager to showcase their talent and compete for glory.

Fuelled by their passion for the beautiful game, they embarked on an ambitious mission: to organize a 64-team Street Soccer Tournament in 2007.
What had started as a dream had blossomed into something truly extraordinary—an event that transcended the confines of the street soccer court and left an indelible mark on their community. Their hearts swelled with pride.

For Pam and Prakash, the journey had only just begun, and they couldn’t wait to see where their shared passion would take them next.

Expanding the Reach

Success breeds expansion, and Silverstar found itself ready to take on new horizons. Strategic decisions were made that enabled the business to grow its presence, from diversifying tournament offerings to tapping into new markets. Witness how the spirit of survival evolved into a spirit of thriving.

Pam and Prakash noticed a decoration setup for a birthday event and found it easy and interesting, sparking the idea to venture into the field in 2008.

Recognizing the couple’s burgeoning interest for this endeavor, their closest friends graciously extended their unwavering support, entrusting them with the task of orchestrating the decorations for their birthday celebrations.

Initially, lacking any decorations of their own, they found themselves in the role of intermediaries, relying on established industry leaders to fulfill their needs, effectively serving as middlemen in the process.

The duo, being young and relatively inexperienced, encountered some initial hesitance from certain clients who were wary of entrusting them with their business. However, they were heartened by the overwhelming support and encouragement from others who were impressed by their passion and determination to succeed. These supporters graciously provided them with opportunities to prove themselves and serve their needs. This implies a significant level of trust and responsibility.

Organizing such events involves understanding the preferences and tastes of the birthday person or couple, selecting appropriate decorations, coordinating with vendors, and ensuring everything is set up according to plan.

Eventually, they reached a point where they felt confident enough to handle projects independently, such as stitching their own backdrops. They stitched their very first blue and cream glitter themed backdrop for a 1st Birthday at Civil Service Club in 2009.

Gradually, the both of them ventured deeper into the industry, starting with small events like birthdays and ROMs (Registry of Marriages). Their first significant customization was a casino-themed order for a 21st birthday party at Bayview Hotel which was a creation that undoubtedly caught everyone’s attention.

Rising Against All Odds

As the part-time business flourished, so did the couple’s love for each other.

The duo’s journey continued when they decided to embark on a beautiful adventure not just in marriage but in the enchanting world of wedding decor in 2013. Their togetherness fueled a vision — to create spaces that echoed the unique love stories of each couple they encountered.

They grew both personally and professionally. Their shared commitment to love and happiness not only strengthened their marriage but also fueled the progress of their business.

By 2013, the volume of work had grown to the point where the duo found themselves stretched beyond capacity. Recognizing the opportunity for growth and amidst the safety of routine and certainty, they made the bold decision to quit their full time jobs, leave their comfort zones and fully commit to the business, the uncertain world of entrepreneurship. Faced with doubts and insecurities, they embarked on a journey where every step was a leap of faith.

Yet, in the midst of chaos, Pam and Prakash found resilience. Through sleepless nights and countless setbacks, they forged ahead, fueled by a shared vision and unwavering determination. And as the hurdles grew taller, so did their resolve.

Slowly, amidst the chaos, their business began to take shape. In 2014, they took the significant step of officially incorporating the business into a Private Limited company, marking a pivotal moment in our entrepreneurial journey. Silverstar Production was then renamed to Silverstar Decor as they focused on event decorations.

In the end, what began as a leap into the unknown became a testament to the power of belief in oneself and the ability to navigate through uncertainty to find success on their own terms.

Pam has been very patient with answering all of our queries and she helped us to piece everything together. She also ensured that the deco for all our events were very different. It was beyond our expectations. Silverstar Decor really went the extra mile. We are still not over how beautiful our wedding deco was.
